Skin, written text and product details are difficult because viewers recognise small inconsistencies quickly and because errors can change meaning. Each category needs its own review method. A generic sharpness score cannot establish identity, spelling or construction accuracy.
Review skin for identity and natural variation
Compare eyes, mouth, hairline, freckles, scars and facial proportions with an approved reference. Look for waxy smoothing, repeated pores, hard texture borders and inconsistent lighting. Do not treat a more conventionally polished face as an improvement if it changes the person.
View the whole portrait before magnifying. Skin texture that appears acceptable in a crop may create a mask-like face at normal size. Obtain appropriate consent for meaningful synthetic alterations and intended contexts.
Verify text independently from the image
Read every visible word against approved copy. Check letterforms, spacing, punctuation, line breaks and mirrored surfaces. If accuracy matters, replace generated lettering with controlled type rather than repairing letter-like marks repeatedly.
For the web, do not rely on text inside an image for essential information. W3C image guidance distinguishes images that communicate content from decorative treatment, and the page should provide an accessible text equivalent where needed.W3C image guidance ↗
Protect product geometry, materials and colour
Compare seams, fasteners, ports, labels, proportions and surface finish with an approved product reference. Check front, side and reflected views for contradictions. A plausible extra button or altered texture can create a false product claim.
Review colour in a managed workflow and agree which approved photography is authoritative. ICC profiles support communication of colour characteristics, but accurate capture, calibrated review and destination proofing remain necessary.International Color Consortium ↗
Approve each critical category explicitly
Use separate sign-offs for likeness, copy and product accuracy. Name the reference used and the placements covered. A creative lead may approve composition while a product or legal owner confirms the consequential details.
Reopen the final export and inspect each hotspot at use size. If a correction changes adjacent texture or geometry, repeat the relevant review rather than assuming the previous approval still applies.
Prepare references before the review session
For likeness, choose current approved portraits that show relevant angles and distinctive features. For copy, provide the final text in a searchable document. For products, include the exact model, colour and current photography from more than one view. Label references so reviewers can cite them without ambiguity.
Do not use another generated image as the only proof of a protected detail. A reference can guide style, but factual approval should return to an authoritative photograph, drawing, specification or copy source. If those are unavailable, the uncertainty belongs in the release decision.
Choose corrections that preserve authority
If a face changes, return to the source or an identity-preserving composite instead of repainting from memory. If lettering fails, set controlled type and match perspective. If a product feature changes, restore it from approved photography or rebuild the composite around the verified product plate.
Keep the correction layer visible in the working file and describe it in the production record. Flatten only the approved delivery derivative. This allows a later reviewer to distinguish verified repair from generated texture and makes regional or format adaptation safer.
Proof the details where audiences will see them
A product label may pass in the master but become unreadable after a social crop or responsive resize. A skin correction can appear natural on a wide monitor and harsh in a printed close-up. Test the approved asset in every materially different placement.
Attach sign-off to those placements and state when a new crop requires review. If a derivative removes the high-risk detail entirely, record that fact rather than carrying unnecessary correction work. Quality is the fitness of the delivered composition, not the complexity of the master.
A practical decision table
| Detail | Reference | Reject when |
|---|---|---|
| Skin | Approved identity image | Features or natural texture change |
| Text | Approved copy and type | Any meaningful character is wrong |
| Product | Current approved product views | Geometry, colour or material is false |
Release checklist
- Name critical regions
- Use approved references
- Compare whole face and crop
- Read every visible word
- Replace essential generated type
- Check product geometry
- Check reflections and shadows
- Review managed colour
- Record category-specific sign-off
- Repeat review after correction
Common questions
Can optical character recognition approve image text?
It can flag issues, but a person should compare consequential copy and typography with the approved source.
Is visual product similarity enough?
No. Verify the exact model, construction, colour and current approved reference.
