Common artifacts in enlarged images and how to spot them

Recognise halos, ringing, waxy texture, invented detail and repeating patterns before enlarged images enter production.

Enlargement artifacts are easiest to catch when reviewers know where to look and compare the result with the source. Some defects come from the original compression, some from scaling and sharpening, and some from generated detail. Naming the failure helps the team choose a targeted correction.

Inspect high-contrast edges

Bright or dark outlines around objects often indicate oversharpening or ringing. Check hair against a bright sky, dark type on a light label and product edges against a plain background. Compare with the source to see whether the edge was already damaged.

Jagged diagonals and stair steps can become more visible after scaling. Review at intended use size before correcting, because an intervention that looks clean at 300 percent may make the normal view brittle.

Look for false texture and plastic surfaces

Skin, fabric, foliage and granular materials reveal smoothing and hallucination quickly. Waxy skin loses pores and local colour variation. Fabric may gain impossible weave. Leaves may repeat into decorative noise. Compare multiple nearby regions instead of approving one convincing patch.

Generated microdetail should not be treated as recovered evidence. When product material or identity matters, keep the baseline and use verified references. A more detailed result is not automatically a more accurate one.

Check text, anatomy and repeated geometry

Small text can turn into letter-like marks. Fingers, jewellery, spokes, windows and grids may merge or multiply. Reflections can disagree with the object they represent. These errors are often locally plausible, so reviewers need an explicit checklist.

Inspect mirrored or repeated regions for cloning. Tile seams, abrupt noise changes and duplicated objects are easier to see when the image is flipped, temporarily desaturated or compared as a difference overlay.

Separate colour problems from detail problems

Reopen the exported file, not only the working canvas. Compression and format conversion can create a final defect after the creative review has passed. The delivered derivative is the object that needs approval.

Use a repeatable viewing protocol

Open the source and result in a colour-managed viewer, align them to the same crop and move between fit view, intended display size and 100 percent. Disable any viewer sharpening that changes the comparison. Note whether the final placement will add its own scaling or compression.

Inspect a fixed route through the image so peripheral regions are not skipped: top left across each band, then the known risk map. End with a normal whole-image view. The structured sweep catches small failures while the final view confirms that correction work has not damaged overall coherence.

Match the correction to the artifact

If an edge has a halo, reduce or localise sharpening instead of smoothing the whole image. If skin is waxy, return to a less aggressive denoise or generated-detail setting. If text is malformed, replace it from approved copy rather than repeatedly asking an image model to guess.

Correct from the earliest clean stage available. Painting over a compressed final export can hide a symptom while leaving the transformation chain unstable. Save the corrected master as a new version and rerun destination exports so every derivative shares the repair.

Set acceptance at the real scale

A tiny texture discontinuity invisible in the approved mobile card may not justify destructive retouching. The same defect can be unacceptable in a window display. Record viewing size and distance with the decision so future reviewers do not apply a close-up standard without context.

Accuracy risks remain important at any scale. A changed logo, letter, finger count or product feature can alter meaning even when small. Separate perceptual polish from consequential correctness and give the second category a stricter stop condition.

Common questions

Are all artifacts visible at 100 percent?

No. Crop, hierarchy and texture rhythm may fail only at the intended display size or in the full composition.

Can sharpening fix a soft source?

It can improve edge contrast, but it cannot prove or recover detail that was never captured.
