Raster, vector and generative methods are not competing answers to every image problem. Each carries different strengths, limits and review needs. Start with what must remain exact, how the asset will scale and whether new content is allowed.

Use raster for sampled tone and photographic detail

Raster images store a grid of pixels, which suits photography, texture and continuous tone. Their practical limit is resolution at the intended crop and output. Preserve a high-quality master and create controlled derivatives rather than repeatedly resaving a compressed file.

Choose raster when the source truth is photographic and edits need local tonal control. Scaling may help prepare a viable output, but it should not be confused with recovering uncaptured facts.

Use vector for controlled shapes and reusable geometry

Vector artwork represents paths, fills and strokes, making it suitable for logos, icons, diagrams and flat illustration that must scale cleanly. SVG is a W3C standard for vector graphics on the web and can also carry text, structure and interactivity.W3C SVG specification ↗

Vectorisation is not automatically faithful. Tracing a small logo can distort spacing and curves. Use the approved source artwork when it exists, and review points, joins, counters and text before adopting a reconstruction.

Use generative methods for defined invention

Generative workflows are useful for concept exploration, intentionally synthetic scenes and controlled variations where new visual information is part of the brief. They need protected attributes, rights checks, provenance and human review.

Design hybrid workflows around boundaries

Many strong systems combine methods: a photographed product, vector mark and generated environment. Keep exact elements separate and compositable. Define which layer is authoritative and how shadows, perspective, grain and colour are reconciled.

Choose a path for a small logo source

When the only logo source is a small raster image, first search brand archives, old production packages and registration files for approved vector artwork. If none exists, reconstruct paths manually against the best reference and obtain design approval. Automatic tracing may be a starting point, but it should not become the new master by default.

Keep spacing, counters, curves and colour values under review. Set live text from the approved typeface when licensing and availability allow. Export raster versions only after the vector master is accepted, then test them at the smallest digital size where detail can collapse.

Choose a path for an editorial scene

A photographed interview subject usually calls for a raster workflow that protects identity and context. A data diagram beside the portrait benefits from vector construction. A conceptual opener could use generated elements if invention is clear, rights are reviewed and the image does not falsely depict the subject.

Combining the methods does not mean combining their approvals. The subject can approve likeness and context, an editor can verify factual graphics and a creative lead can approve the conceptual layer. Preserve those layers so one correction does not require recreating the entire scene.

Deliver a method-aware asset package

For raster work, include the colour-managed master and placement derivatives. For vector work, include editable paths, outlined or licensed type guidance and tested exports. For generated work, include inputs, production record, meaningful alteration notes and the approved raster composite.

Write down what receiving teams may change. A developer may resize a vector icon but should not alter its proportions. A regional designer may recrop a campaign image within safe bounds but should not regenerate a protected product. Clear permissions turn technical formats into a working system.
